NFL CAREER – A true impact player on the Saints’ defense, Smith has been one of the club’s top performers since being drafted 18th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. He was signed to a six-year contract extension prior to last season, and no player since he joined the team has more than his 36.5 sacks. Also a disruptive force against the run, the Pro Bowl selection in 2006 has only been a full-time starter for the last three seasons, yet has caused 13 fumbles in his career and recovered six. Smith was elected by his teammates as one of the five season-long captains each of the last two years, and sets the tone for entire unit with his rugged play and intensity. Though often double-teamed he had 77 stops last season – pacing the defensive front and his highest total since 2005 – and started all 16 contests despite playing through injuries. Smith has only missed two games in his career, playing in 78 and opening 59, and has posted 342 tackles.
