NFL CAREER – No player with the Saints nears Smith’s 33.5 sacks since he joined the team in 2004, and the former No. 1 pick has been an equally disruptive force against the run during that span. In only his second year as a full-time starter, Smith followed his Pro Bowl season of 2006 with another solid performance, battling through double-teams the entire year to notch a team-high seven sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a safety. He also led the defensive front with 65 tackles while setting the tone for the defense with his toughness, effort and relentless play. Through his first four seasons, Smith has started 43 of 62 games and notched 265 tackles (179 solo) and knocked down 12 passes. He has been particularly adept at creating turnovers throughout his career, forcing 12 fumbles and recovering six – including a five-game stretch from 2004-05 where he caused a fumble in each contest. Smith was selected 18th overall in 2004 after an honor-filled career at Ohio State and has only missed two games in his career since.
