Saints prime-time schedule features familiar faces, high-profile matchups

Week 7 game against Sean Payton, Denver Broncos is among the most anticipated matchups of the Saints 2024 schedule

The winningest coach in New Orleans Saints franchise history will make his first head coaching appearance against New Orleans in prime time, when Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos visit the Caesars Superdome on Thursday night, Oct. 17.

The visit by Payton and the Broncos is among the most high-profile matchups for the Saints in 2024, one of three prime-time games on New Orleans' schedule for the upcoming season.

In addition to Denver on Oct. 17, the Saints' other prime-time appearances are at Kansas City, the reigning two-time Super Bowl champions, on Monday, Oct. 7, and a late-season trip to Green Bay to face the Packers on Monday, Dec. 23.

Payton, who led the franchise from 2006-21 before stepping down following the '21 season, was 152-89 in regular-season games and 9-8 in the playoffs, including a victory over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. He was hired as Denver's coach in '23.

The New Orleans-Denver matchup will culminate a three-games-in-10-days stretch for the Saints, who will begin the string with the trip to Kansas City and will sandwich a Sunday, Oct. 13, visit to the Caesars Superdome from Tampa Bay, which has won the NFC South Division the last two years.

The Saints' mettle will be tested early and often in '24; three of the first six games are against division champions from 2023 and three of the first five games on the road, culminating with the Monday night game in Kansas City.

The Chiefs, who won the AFC West Division, join Dallas and Tampa Bay as reigning division champs that New Orleans will face in the first six games. The Cowboys, who won the NFC East, will host the Saints in the second game of the season on Sept. 15.

New Orleans will have its bye on Week 12, and it will come during a monthlong stretch at home. On Nov. 10 in the Superdome, the Falcons will finish their season series against the Saints, followed by Cleveland's game in New Orleans on Nov. 17. The Saints then will enjoy their off week before hosting the Rams on Dec. 1.

But following the Rams game the Saints will end the season as it began, with three road trips – Dec. 8 against the Giants in New Jersey, Dec. 23 at Green Bay and the regular-season finale in Tampa Bay – in five games. One of the two final home games is against Washington on Dec. 15, and features a return to Louisiana by former LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, the Commanders' rookie quarterback.

The regular-season home finale is Dec. 29 against the Raiders; Saints quarterback Derek Carr spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Raiders before joining New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent in '23.

The Saints will play five of their six NFC South division games within the first 10 weeks of the season.

The regular season opener will have Carolina travel to New Orleans for a noon kickoff on Sept. 8, followed by the Saints' trip to Dallas and then a visit to New Orleans by the Eagles on Sept. 22.
