DOUBLE SESSION FOR DEUCE: RB Deuce McAllister practiced both this morning, in a practice that featured some live goal-line drills, and once again this afternoon when the concentration was more on the passing game and also featured some red zone situations.
Clearly it is a sign that McAllister is continuing to rebound from the knee injury that curtailed his 2007 season.
The highlight from McAllister had to be when he hauled in a short pass from Drew Brees and bulled his way into the end zone.
BLUE GETS DREW: CB Randall "Blue" Gay, who I asked following practice where the nickname came from (he had no idea, other than the fact he has been called it his entire life. In fact, he said he often doesn't even respond when people call him Randall, because no one calls him Randall), made a tremendous interception when he snatched a pass away from former LSU teammate Skyler Green. The pass was ripped out Green's hands and Gay took off down the sideline for what probably would have been a score.
MR. MIKE: Not to be left out of the action, Mike McKenzie had his hands on two passes, but couldn't reel in an interception. It really is remarkable to see where McKenzie is in his rehab from the ugly injury that he suffered after a great hustle play late last year. McKenzie, one of the really good guys to play in the NFL, looks tremendous on the field.
WILY WILL: DE Will Smith rocketed into the backfield twice for what would have been sacks in game situations. There were reports that Smith was hobbled in the Saints' Saturday scrimmage, although he returned to action. Smith certainly looked no worse for wear.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Hard to argue with Gay's interception. But since we have already touched on it, let's give it to AA. The best catch of the day was occurred when rookie Adrian Arrington fought through the outstretched arms of CB Jason David and made a great catch on a pass thrown by QB Tyler Palko. Arrington just continues to make plays every single day.
TUESDAY PRACTICE SESSION: The team will practice once on Tuesday, at 3:40, on the Millsaps College Campus.
DID YOU KNOW? I asked Drew Brees and Sean Payton their favorite movies for an NFL Films project today. Brees, who more often than not, picks the movies for the team's charter flights, checked in with "Caddyshack." His reasoning? "I love golf, and that is a movie that makes me laugh from start to finish. It doesn't matter how many times I watch it, how many of the lines I know from heart. I still laugh every single time I see it."
Payton paused for a moment and then said, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." I asked him why. He said, "Jack." Obviously in reference to Jack Nicholson.
