TODAY: The New Orleans Saints will take the practice field at Ochsner Sports Performance Center for a padded workout that is scheduled to last about two and a half hours, starting at 8:50 a.m. The practice will be open to the public.
NEWEST SAINT: On Thursday the Saints re-signed tight end Jake Powell and waived quarterback J.T. Barrett. Powell, 6-6, 230, was originally signed by New Orleans following the 2019 NFL Draft out of Monmouth. The Marlton, N.J., native appeared in 26 games with 20 starts, posting 54 receptions for 642 yards and six touchdowns.
PLAYS OF THE DAY: Third-year tight end Dan Arnold made a pair of impressive catches in Thursday's practice. Arnold caught a high throw from quarterback Taysom Hill, coming down with the ball and absorbing a hit from linebacker Vince Biegel. Later in practice, Arnold made a nice catch on a 20-yard out throw from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Arnold, 6-6, 220, is a converted wide receiver from Wisconsin-Platteville, who played in 10 regular season games with one start in 2018, catching 12 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown after spending his rookie campaign on Injured Reserve.
SPECIAL GUESTS: On Thursday in a practice open to suiteholders, VIPs and corporate sponsors, former Saints wide receivers Robert Meachem and Lance Moore visited with camp guests and also caught up with coaches, player and staff. Meachem and Moore were one half of the wide receiver quartet along with Marques Colston and Devery Henderson that were productive weapons for quarterback Drew Brees for several seasons in New Orleans.
BREAKFAST: An important part of the day for Saints players is what they put into their body in the morning prior to an 8:50 a.m. practice. According to Director of Sports Nutrition Jamie Meeks breakfast before practice or any type of major physical activity by a person should consist of a combination of complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates, for energy right away and sustained energy to last longer throughout practice. In addition, also including some protein foods for muscle repair and recovery and to help keep the athlete feeling full for longer. She encourages players to limit high fat foods right before heavy training, as fat is digested much slower and can make the athlete feel heavy and sluggish at practice.
DRILLING AWAY: At Friday's practice, fans will be able to see red zone work as the team continues its installation process. An interesting drill is one that pops up periodically with the running backs, where running backs coach Joel Thomas runs his players through a drill with what appears to be purple footballs. What it actually is, is the ball wrapped in purple sleeves which make them harder to hang onto, a way of emphasizing ball security.
STAT OF THE DAY: Wide receiver Michael Thomas caught a franchise-record 125 passes in 2019, leading the NFL as well. Thomas' 125 grabs was also the fifth-highest single-season total in NFL record books.
TRAINING CAMP LIVE: The NFL Network will catch every bit of action at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center Friday, as its flagship show "Inside Training Camp Live", which will be hosted by David Carr, Michael Silver and Amber Theoharis, featuring coverage from the practice, live looks and interviews post-practice with Payton, Brees, defensive end Cameron Jordan and wide receiver Michael Thomas.
SATURDAY: The Saints will return to action Saturday, with a padded practice that is open to the general public at 8:50 a.m.
