The New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans proudly announce the hiring of Captain Nate Degen as a member of their staff. Captain Degen will join the teams in a role focused on Fan Engagement Experience within the Business Operations division. His hiring is a notable first as both organizations are embracing the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, facilitating this collaboration between the military and professional sports organizations.
Captain Degen, an established Army helicopter pilot, is transitioning from a military career to the world of sports management. Following a successful career in the Army, including serving as a Team Army athlete at the 2024 Department of Defense Warrior Games, Captain Degen is set to bring his remarkable resilience, adaptability, and leadership skills to the Saints and Pelicans. Having sustained multiple injuries, he underwent recovery at the Fort Belvoir Soldier Recovery Unit, where he prepared for a future beyond the Army. His commitment to excellence, honed through adaptive sports and recovery, positions him as a valuable asset to our teams.
"I am incredibly honored and excited about this opportunity with the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans," said Captain Degen. "This transition is both thrilling and bittersweet. Leaving behind my career as a pilot is challenging, but joining these renowned organizations and contributing to their Fan Engagement Experience is an incredible next chapter. The entire organization has already made me feel like part of the family, and I am eager to bring my passion and dedication to this new role."
Captain Degen's role will involve enhancing the fan experience, leveraging his background and skills to foster a deeper connection between the teams and their supporters. His experiences and insights from his military career will bring a fresh perspective to the Saints and Pelicans, enriching the overall fan experience.
In addition to his new role, Captain Degen will represent Team Army at the upcoming Warrior Games, competing in various events including archery, air rifle, shot put, and discus. His participation is a testament to his enduring spirit and commitment to excellence.
"The DOD SkillBridge program is a powerful initiative that bridges the gap between military service and civilian careers." said Gayle Benson, Owner of the New Orleans Saints and Governor of the New Orleans Pelicans. "By providing service members with hands-on experience and training in the private sector, it ensures a smoother transition into meaningful, successful careers. This program not only benefits our veterans but also enriches the workforce with their unparalleled skills and dedication."
Captain Degen, originally from California, reflects on his journey with enthusiasm "Ironically, my first NFL jersey was a Reggie Bush New Orleans Saints jersey. It feels like a full-circle moment to now begin my professional sports career with the Saints and Pelicans."
As Captain Degen prepares for this transition, he is also anticipating the birth of his second child, adding a personal milestone to this significant career change.
