Dave Waymer's Career Background

Former Saints defensive back Dave Waymer was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1996 posthumously after a decade-long career with the Black and Gold.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native, who grew up in Charlotte, N.C., was selected in the second round (41st overall) of the 1980 NFL Draft by the Saints, hailing from Notre Dame, where he won a National Championship. A dependable and durable player, Waymer played in all 16 games for all but two years of his career in New Orleans, finishing with 37 interceptions and 15 fumble recoveries. He led the team in interceptions six out of ten years and his nine interceptions in 1986 tie for second in franchise history. In addition, his 37 career interceptions still rank first in Saints record books.

Waymer was an integral part in New Orleans first winning season in 1987. In fact, arguably his greatest moment in his career came on November 29, 1987 in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. New Orleans had extended their lead with a late fourth quarter field goal to bring the score to 20-14. However, punter Brian Hansey took a safety and the Steelers drove down to the New Orleans 11-yard line with a chance to score and win the game. On the final play of regulation, Waymer read a pass that was intended for Steelers WR Calvin Sweeney perfectly, picking it off to seal the Saints 20-16 victory and clinch their first ever winning season since the franchise started play in 1967.

After the 1989 season, Waymer signed with San Francisco where he spent two years before spending his final year with the Los Angeles Raiders. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 34.
