New Orleans Saints Coach Dennis Allen joined Voice of the Saints Mike Hoss and Saints legend Bobby Hebert the Saints Coaches Show on WWL on Monday to talk about the win over the Dallas Cowboys, their upcoming matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles and more.
Here's the top five takeaway's from Allen's appearance:
1. Derek Carr's efficiency through two games
Quarterback Derek Carr has gotten off to an incredibly efficient start to the season, completing 30 of his 39 attempts (76.9%) for 443 yards and five touchdowns to only one interception. He leads the league in yards per attempts with 11.4 and passer rating with 142.4.
"When that first number of your quarterback efficiency starts with a one and it's a three-digit number, that's pretty freaking good in our league and he's operating at a very, very high level," Allen said. "The efficiency that he's operating, that is really impressive and really that goes back to the end of last year. I think he's been really playing exceptional football for us and we're going to need him to continue to do that."
Allen said the team's offensive efficiency displayed in the 44-19 win over the Dallas Cowboys is not due solely to Carr.
"Obviously, I think our receivers are doing a great job of running routes, getting open," he said. "I think we're scheming some guys open a little bit, and I think our protection has been outstanding and I think when you have all those things going together and your quarterback's operating at a high level, it allows you to be pretty good on offense."
2. Alvin Kamara aging like a fine wine
Running back Alvin Kamara put together one of his best games in his already historic Saints career against the Cowboys. Kamara rushed 20 times for 115 yards and three touchdowns and added another 65 receiving yards on two receptions, including a 57-yard touchdown. Kamara leads the league in touchdowns and yards from scrimmage through two weeks while playing in his eighth NFL season at the age of 29.
"I never once looked at his birth certificate, so I don't really care what his age says," Allen said. "I watched the tape, I watched the practice, I watch what he does day in and day out. I still see a fast, explosive running back. I see a guy that's engaged with what we're doing. I see a guy that believes in what we're doing and I think that's why you're seeing such an improved version of himself. I think he believes in what we're doing offensively. He feels like there's an opportunity for success, both for him individually and for us as a team, and he's totally bought into everything and he's been outstanding. Ever since he came back to the start of training camp, he's been nothing but outstanding for our football team."
Kamara's four touchdowns against Dallas made him the only Saint to ever tally multiple games with four or more touchdowns and he became only the third player in franchise history to eclipse 6,000 rushing yards joining running backs Deuce McAllister and Mark Ingram II.
3. Rookie Kool-Aid McKinstry holds up in first career start
Saints rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry registered his first career start Sunday, filling in for the injured cornerback Marshon Lattimore. McKinstry played 61 snaps on defense and contributed five tackles (three solo) and a pass defensed. Allen said he thought McKinstry did well.
"There's certainly a few things that we need to clean up, but I thought he graded out pretty well," he said. "I thought it was pretty clean in terms of his technique and his fundamentals. I thought his effort was solid. I think, certainly with him missing all of the spring and even missing some time in training camp with a knee injury, I think we're still working on getting him back into really, really top football shape. He's been working extremely hard at doing that. This kid's going to be a good player for us and he's going to need to step up and play for us at times this year. And I thought he did that in this game and, for his first time out against a highly explosive offense, I thought he did really well."
4. Chase Young notches first career QB takedown in Black and Gold
Defensive end Chase Young brought down his first quarterback since joining the Saints in the offseason, splitting a sack with defensive end Carl Granderson. Despite Young's stats not jumping off the page, Allen praised what he has put on tape.
"I think the stats are going to come, I think, when you're continuing to be as active as he's been, continuing to be as disruptive as he's been," Allen said. "And look, he's gotten a lot of attention and so that's opening up some things for some other players on the team. Production doesn't always necessarily show up on the stat sheet. He's got a lot of hidden production, but I think as the season wears on, I think you're going to see plenty of stats from Chase Young."
Young also added four tackles (two solo) in the win over Dallas.
5. Rashid Shaheed taking defenses by surprise
Wide receiver/kick returner Rashid Shaheed put up another impressive outing tallying four receptions for 96 yards including a 70-yard touchdown reception, the longest reception by a Saint since Oct. 10, 2021.
"I'm not sure that the defensive players in our league recognize how explosive Rashid Shaheed is because he continues to get behind the defense," Allen said. "I think that's what this kid can really do. He can really run and then on top of that like he's really good in transition and so there's so many things that he can do. You have to respect the speed, you have to try to stay on top and when you do that you'll open up some more things underneath. And just the fact that he can run like he can, opens up so much more for all the rest of our offense. So, he's a big part of what we're doing. Probably doesn't get enough credit for what he can do with his speed on the field, but we're certainly glad we got him."
Shaheed also added three carries for 13 yards in the win over the Cowboys.
