The fourth annual Saints Kickoff Run presented by Chevron took place in Champions Square on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 with Ian Carr and Brittany Buchanan winning the men's and women's divisions.
The 5k (3.1-mile) race started in Champions Square and once again the race finish line was the 50-yard line in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Following the 5k race there was a Saints Kids Fun Run presented by Raising Cane's. The half-mile course also finised on the 50-yard line of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Proceeds from the event benefit the Louisiana Children's Museum.
Gumbo and Sir Saint, the club's mascots, memers of the Saintsations and former Saints defensive back Tyrone Hughes were all in attendance to cheer on participants.
"It's one of my top races - just to be able to finish in the Superdome, it's a great, fast race," said Carr, 25 of Kenner. Carr was the overall winner of the male division, finishing the 5k race in 16:43. It was the third consecutive year has won the race.
Buchanan, 23, of New Orleans won the women's division in 19:36.
"That was a really great finish. I've never been inside the Superdome so that was cool. My first time coming in here and finishing a 5k was really cool," Buchanan said. "It was my first race since college, I haven't run a race in a year and a half so that was fun."
The event also featured a pre-race costume contest. The winners of the contest received tickets to the first 2015 Saints home game.
"It's an exciting event, we could not have had more perfect weather, 68 degrees. Just a great day to run and the Saints fans are incredibly excited to be here and I think we had the highest turnout ever for the Saints 5k," said Jamie Monroe, race director from Easy Day Sports. "It's just a great way for the fans to remember that the season is starting and it's also just a time of anticipation with the first game tomorrow."
In addition to Chevron and Raising Cane's, Entergy and Academy Sports + Outdoors were official sponsors of the Saints Kickoff Run.
"This is one of my favorite races that we do all year. I just can't even explain how awesome it is to get to run through the city of New Orleans and then end in the Superdome on the 50-yard line," said Leah Brown, Chevron public affairs manager. "I think that is probably the highlight of the run for most people."
This year's race had more than 6,000 participants. For race results, click here.
"It's about the experience, the venue - in Champions Square. They're finishing on the 50-yard line and there is really no better venue in the NFL, in my mind," Monroe said. "They come out and feel like they're at the game, tailgating."
