New Orleans Saints open training camp fueled to reverse recent course

'We have a chip on our shoulder, and that's energizing'

Irvine, Calif. – The "business" portion of the New Orleans Saints' trip here for training camp practices at the University of California, Irvine, won't officially begin until Wednesday, with the first of four consecutive non-padded practices.

But for a team that has missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, Tuesday wasn't too early to remind a fan base that grew accustomed to a certain level of success prior to the dip that it hears and understands the concerns.

And Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis said there are a couple of on-hand remedies to help re-energize the base.

"We have a chip on our shoulder, and that's energizing," Loomis said. "And I think that we have talent – I think we have a lot of young players; we have a combination of young players that are trying to make their mark and we have a group of veteran players that are unsatisfied with the results of the last few years."

And so, Camp Irvine will commence with the Saints away from the home base in Metairie due to construction at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center, with an offensive installation process that will enter the next phase, a few question marks on the offensive line and a team aiming to return to the postseason for the first time since 2020.

"Being away from home and away from our fans in New Orleans, obviously, that's the tough part about being out here in California for this training camp," Coach Dennis Allen said. "But I'd say we're excited about being out here, we're excited about getting an opportunity to get out here in the Southern California weather and practice in this type of environment.

"I think when you get into this type of environment, one of the things it allows you to do, I think it allows you to push the guys harder for longer (periods of time). There's nothing easy about training camp, and certainly there's a toughness that comes with practicing in the environment that we practice in back home in Metairie.

"But there's also a challenge that comes along with that, and at some point sometimes you can reach the point of diminishing marginal returns on that investment in terms of practicing out there in the heat and humidity."

The Saints will open practice tomorrow without right tackle Ryan Ramczyk, who will miss the season after being placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, but defensive end Chase Young will be on the field, as will running back Alvin Kamara .

"Chase Young will participate in some form of practice (Wednesday)," Allen said. "We have three players – (defensive end) Tanoh (Kpassagnon), (linebacker) Nephi (Sewell) and (tight end) Juwan Johnson – those three players will not be practicing (Wednesday). Everybody else on the roster will be practicing in some form or fashion, some may be little bit more limited based on coming off injuries and things like that."

Kamara, the franchise all-time leader in touchdowns (78) and rushing touchdowns (54), and who is 672 rushing yards from becoming the franchise's all-time leading rusher, showed up on time after missing the last day of practice at minicamp in June.

"He was out there today (Tuesday), he ran the conditioning test," Allen said. "Every indication that we've gotten is that he's going to be out here practicing tomorrow. That's what we expect. We're looking forward to working with him. Having him out here and having him practice and having him work, I think that's beneficial for all of us. With a new system and new offense, I think that's important. And yet, I think we all understand there's a business aspect to the game of football. But every indication that we've gotten is that he'll be out here practicing."

"I haven't had a conversation with him (Tuesday), but he's here," Loomis said. "I think one thing that we have to understand is that 50 percent of our organization – players, coaches, administrators, scouts – feel like they're underpaid. How each of us respond to that and act accordingly, that's a personal issue. I appreciate that he's here. He's in great shape, like he always is, and we're looking for a good season."

New Orleans also is preparing to enter its first season since 2016 without Ramczyk, who was named All-Pro three times after being drafted in 2017.

"Whenever you lose a player the caliber of Ryan Ramczyk, it's a little bit of an unsettling feeling," Allen said. "That hurts, not having a player of his caliber. I do think that we have some guys that I think are capable of stepping in and filling in at that position and some young guys that I think can step up and potentially fill that spot."

New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis and Coach Dennis Allen speak about the state of the team ahead of 2024 Saints Training Camp on July 23, 2024.
