Irvine, Calif. – New Orleans Saints second-year quarterback Jake Haener disclosed Friday that he has a rare skin cancer.

Haener, a fourth-round pick last year who's battling for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind starter Derek Carr, said the condition isn't life-threatening and it has not caused him to miss the team's first three training camp practices at Cal-Irvine. He will undergo an evaluation Aug. 1 before a treatment plan is enacted.

"For my age, it's kind of rare that it pops up like that," said the 25-year-old Haener, who was wearing a small bandage on his right cheek. "I'm trying to get that evaluated with our training staff.

"I have a consultation with doctors Aug. 1, on our off day, to try to figure out how long I can wait, because I have to get a different procedure done on my face. So we're just kind of trying to take the necessary steps to see how long I can wait until I have to get that procedure done. "

Haener, who spoke to the media following Friday's training camp practice at Cal-Irvine, said he noticed an abnormality about seven to 10 days before reporting for training camp.

"It was just this random, odd-looking bump that kept growing," he said. "For me, it was like, I don't have a lot of acne like that, and it popped up and we knew to go to the dermatologist.

"They removed it, they did a biopsy on it and it came back last week, before camp (opened), that it was a rare form of skin cancer for my age. We've got to get that evaluated with doctors Aug. 1. We'll take the necessary steps that it takes and then hopefully when we get back to New Orleans after the preseason, I'll be able to get that procedure done.

"I'm OK mentally. It's just something I've got to take care of and do the necessary steps, and the people here have been great helping me deal with that."

Though the cancer isn't considered life threatening, Haener said it was important to get this taken care of quickly.

"With these skin cancers if you wait, things spread," he said. "So I've just got to get it taken care of."

Haener, in a battle with fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and Nathan Peterman for No. 2 quarterback, had an impressive offseason.

"I feel like I'm young and healthy to have something like that pop up, but I want to take care of it and I want to be responsible about it," he said. "And obviously not make it a distraction, because I'm going to be fine, everything is going to be taken care of.

"But I don't want to wait too long with something like this, and I want to get a handle (on it). The organization has been great with communicating with me and setting things up to make sure I'm healthy."
