Saints Training Camp 2024: Key Takeaways from Friday, Aug. 16

Left tackle Taliese Fuaga misses second practice

Full coverage of the New Orleans Saints workouts during 2024 Training Camp at the University of California, Irvine on Friday, August 16.

  1. Friday Quick Hits: Friday marked the final training camp practice at UC-Irvine for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints got 18 practices in at the complex, over a 25-day span. There were zero delays for any type of weather situation, which was pretty consistent every single day. The temperatures ranged from 75-85 degrees and a consistent breeze from the SSW and no clouds other than the occasional marine layer early in the morning which always burned off by the beginning of practice at 9 a.m. Pacific time.- -- Left tackle Taliese Fuaga missed his second day of work with back tightness. In his absence, Landon Young got all the reps with the first team at that position. It is still in question whether Fuaga would play Sunday in the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. As Coach Dennis Allen mentioned, if he was healthy, Fuaga would play. --- Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed was not at practice due to a foot/toe injury. Shaheed had just gotten out of the red jersey a couple of days earlier and was also taking first team kickoff return reps with Taysom Hill before this latest setback. ---W ide receiver A.T. Perry participated in walk-through after missing the last couple of days with an ankle injury but did not participate in team drills. --- Kicker Blake Grupe went 8 for 9 on kicks, missing from 44 yards right hash wide right. Most of the kickers' misses have been wide right at the western end of the field, as the crosswind from right to left has been tricky to navigate at times. Grupe is now 57 for 68 on all training camp kicks. It appears the competition between Grupe and Charlie Smythe will go down to the final day as it did last year between Grupe and Wil Lutz.
  2. Two-minute Haener: Quarterback Jake Haenerhas had a solid camp. There is also a real competition between him and Spencer Rattler , vying for the backup role to Derek Carr . Haener has shown a maturity level and confidence of a seasoned veteran throughout the last few weeks. We mentioned Thursday his naked bootleg for a touchdown which he and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak discussed in the huddle prior to the play. Haener has also shown the ability to move the team down the field in a two-minute situation. Friday was no exception. With 48 seconds left on the clock, the offense was down five points and the ball at the minus 45-yard line. It took Haener five plays to get into legitimate scoring position, highlighted by catches from Kevin Austin Jr and Samson Nacua. After the catch by Nacua at the 14-yard line, Haener appeared to clock the ball, however, he faked the spike and barely missed Austin in the back left of the end zone. Undeterred, on the very next play with 10 seconds left Haener went right back to Austin in the end zone to give the offense the lead. Haener then lined up to go for two, but backpedaled and took a knee, thus taking out of play a turnover which the defense could return for two points the other direction, thereby preserving the 29-28 win.
  1. Play of the Day: Mind you, the team was in shells Friday, so no real hitting, though we did see a bit of a dustup between offensive lineman Lucas Patrick and defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, along with center Erik McCoy and defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd. Prior to that a situation where the offense was backed up at their own 1-yard line played out. With Haener again at quarterback he moved the ball down the field helped by big plays from Equanimeous St. Brown and a fourth-down conversion catch by Stanley Morgan Jr. On the 10th play of the drive, the ball was at the plus 43-yard line. Haener took the snap and handed it off to Jacob Kibodi, an undrafted rookie running back from Baton Roug . The former ULL Ragin Cajun hit the hole hard up the middle and busted into the secondary with ease, going the distance for a 43-yard touchdown run. Runs like that have been a bit of a novelty during this camp, so it was good to see the rookie make the most of the opportunity, as the RB3 position is still very much up for grabs due to the absence of Kendre Miller, and James Robinson is also getting tons of reps at that spot and is in the mix.
