On June 15, 2015 former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason was selected as the Pro Football Writers of America's George Halas Award winner.

The award is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes adversity.

In 2011, Gleason was diagnosed with ALS.
