Michael Wilhoite enters his second season with the Saints and first as a defensive assistant, after serving as a special teams assistant in 2019.
Under the supervision of Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi and Assistant Special Teams Coach Phil Galiano, Wilhoite helped tutor a Saints kicking game group that was ranked first in overall National Football League special teams rankings by NFL writer Rick Gosselin.
Originally signed to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in the final month of the 2011 regular season out of Washburn University after starting his professional career with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League, Wilhoite played six NFL seasons with the 49ers (2012-16) and Seattle Seahawks (2017). He played in 79 career games with 45 starts and posted career totals of 316 tackles, a half-sack, four interceptions, nine passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 40 special teams stops.
A Topeka, Kansas native, Wilhoite played collegiately at Washburn, where he played safety for six seasons and was selected to play in the Cactus Bowl, the Division II all-star game following his senior campaign in 2010.
