Game recap: San Francisco 49ers 16, New Orleans Saints 10 | 2024 NFL Preseason Week 2

First-team offense, defense have strong performances

Check out the game action shots from the New Orleans Saints game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL Preseason.

The New Orleans Saints ended their nearly month-long California sojourn Sunday night with a 16-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

But the first-team units will have plenty of good game film to review on the long flight home as both units dominated the 49ers in the first quarter and the early part of the second quarter.

Defensive ends Carl Granderson and Chase Young spent most of their time in the 49ers' backfield, harassing San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy into a two-for-six outing and just 12 yards of offense.

Quarterback Derek Carr engineered a 16-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that feature some impressive run blocking by the offensive line and showcased the versatile abilities of Taysom Hill, who powered in for a 1-yard out on fourth down. Carr played the first three series and ended his night seven of nine for 47 yards. Hill (five for 21 yards) and Jamaal Williams (five for 32 yards) did much of the rushing damage early.

The second- and third-stringers didn't fare as well for New Orleans (1-1). Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler lost a fumble and second-year quarterback Jake Haener nearly had one as neither did much to separate themselves in the race to be Carr's backup.

The following Saints players didn't dress for the game: Paulson Adebo, Ugo Amadi, Demario Davis, Taliese Fuaga, Jaylan Ford, Dallin Holker, Michael Jacobson, Trajan Jeffcoat, Alvin Kamara, Marshon Lattimore, Kendre Miller, Monty Rice, Nick Saldiveri, Rashid Shaheed, Isaiah Stalbird, Mason Tipton and Pete Werner.

Rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry started but left during the first series with a right leg injury. Rookie center Sincere Haynesworth was carted to the locker room in the third quarter. Rookie defensive tackle Khristian Boyd left the game in the fourth quarter.

The Saints will have two open practices this week: Tuesday night at Tulane (7-9 p.m.) and Friday afternoon at the Caesars Superdome (1-3 p.m.). Tickets are still available. New Orleans will end the preseason with a 1 p.m. game against the Tennessee Titans at the Caesars Superdome.
