Game notes: New Orleans Saints at San Francisco 49ers | 2024 NFL Preseason Week 2

The Saints outgained the 49ers in rushing 134 yards to 93

  • New Orleans fell to 1-1 in the preseason in a hard-fought 16-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The Saints return to action on Sunday, Aug. 25 when they host the Tennessee Titans in the transformed Caesars Superdome to close out the 2024 preseason. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CST and the game will be aired locally on Fox-8.
  • The New Orleans defense allowed just 16 points and held San Francisco to 5-of-13 on third down conversions (33.3 pct.).
  • The Saints outgained the 49ers in rushing 134 yards to 93 yards.
  • Quarterback Derek Carr got the start for New Orleans and was efficient in his short work, completing seven-of-nine passes for 47 yards and leading the Saints to their only touchdown drive, a 16-play, 95-yard drive lasting over eight minutes that ended in a Taysom Hill 1-yard rushing touchdown.
  • Hill was all over the field in his limited work, totaling five carries for 21 yards to go along with the rushing score in the first half.
  • Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler replaced Carr in the second quarter and finished four of eight for 27 yards.
  • Quarterback Jake Haener finished the game for New Orleans, adding 76 yards through the air on seven-of-13 passing.
  • Running back Jamaal Williams was effective on the ground for the Black and Gold, adding five carries for 32 yards (6.4 avg), including 28 yards on the touchdown drive.
  • Running back Jordan Mims led the Saints with game-highs in both carries (10) and rushing yards (37). He also added two kickoff returns for 44 yards with a long of 29.
  • Running back James Robinson added five rushes for 27 yards and two grabs in relief while also adding a 27-yard kickoff return.
  • In limited action in the first half, receiver Chris Olave hauled in three receptions for 26 yards, including a team-long 19-yard grab from Carr.
  • Second-year receiver A.T. Perry recorded two receptions for 24 yards, while rookie receiver Bub Means added two catches for 16 yards in his first NFL game action.
  • Tight end Mason Fairchild led the Saints with 31 receiving yards on three receptions (10.3 avg).
  • Defensive end Carl Granderson added one sack of quarterback Brock Purdy in the first half for a 2-yard loss.
  • Defensive end Chase Young was disruptive facing his former team, adding two stops to go along with two quarterbacks hits and blowing up a screen pass.
  • Linebacker Anfernee Orji had a team-high eight tackles (seven solo), one stop for loss and two pass breakups.
  • Linebacker Khaleke Hudson added the second sack for the Black and Gold to go along with three tackles.
  • Safety Johnathan Abram added three stops (two solo), a pass defense and a special teams tackle.
  • Cornerback Rejzohn Wright posted four solo tackles, one stop for loss and two pass breakups.
  • Kicker Blake Grupe nailed his only field-goal attempt, a 52-yarder early in the third quarter to bring the Saints to within three points.
