Kevin Mangum, an instrumental member of the New Orleans Saints Athletic Training staff for 44 years, announced his retirement today. One of the longest tenured members of the Saints organization, Mangum first started with the Saints as an intern during 1980 training camp and was hired full-time by former Head Athletic Trainer Dean Kleinschmidt, a recipient of the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Award of Excellence, at the start of the 1981 season.

"I have worked for a first class organization with amazing people and special friends for 44 years. As I close out my time here, it has become even more evident how very fortunate I am to have spent over half my life working for the New Orleans Saints," said Mangum. "I have always worked to embrace God's perfect will for my life, and I know now, without a doubt, that it was his will that I remain with this football club for my entire career. I don't deserve all the grace that I have been given, but by grace and through faith, God has given me so much. To Mrs. Benson, Mickey Loomis, Dennis Lauscha, and all the players and staff I have worked with in my career, I wish you nothing but the very best and thank you so very much."

Mangum was a part of some of the most significant moments in team history, including two NFC West Division Championships, seven NFC South Division Championships, 14 playoff teams, three appearances in NFC Championship games, and the club's Super Bowl XLIV Championship team.

"Kevin has been a nationally acclaimed athletic trainer, working quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes of our operations for four decades," said Owner Gayle Benson. "We are truly grateful for his professionalism and the dedication he showed throughout his legendary career. His hard work and selflessness have left a lasting impact, and he will always be welcome in our organization. His influence extends far beyond the training room, shaping the culture of excellence and care that defines our team. As he steps into this well-deserved next chapter of his life, we sincerely wish Kevin the very best in retirement and thank him for the immeasurable contributions he made to our success."

"Kevin established a well-earned Hall of Fame career in the athletic training field that exceeded four decades with the Saints. He conducted himself with tremendous grace, dignity, and was the epitome of professionalism throughout his outstanding career," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis. "He has been and will always remain highly respected by his co-workers, the thousands of players, both former and current, that have worn a Saints uniform, and by the coaches and administrators that have worked here. Kevin is held in the highest regard among his professional peers and has been an outstanding mentor to countless young women and men. He will always be a cherished member of the fabric of the New Orleans Saints and we congratulate both he and his family on an amazing career. He deserves a long and healthy retirement and we are proud of his accomplishments and contributions to our organization."

"I have known Kevin since he was in high school and he would come to the Saints facility during Thanksgiving holidays to work with Dean Kleinschmidt," said Saints Legend Archie Manning. "He always took great care of me during my playing days. Kevin is the absolute best and I wish him, his wife Susie, and their entire family nothing but the best moving forward."

A native of Tylertown, Miss., Mangum has collected a lengthy list of honors in his career, including being inducted into the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2008, University of Southern Mississippi Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Southwest Mississippi Community College Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2022, he was also honored by the Saints Hall of Fame with the Joe Gemelli "Fleur-De-Lis" Award, the hall's annual honor recognizing significant contributions made to the franchise.

Mangum's contributions have helped the Saints athletic training staff earn several awards, including the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association (SEATA) Professional Athletic Trainers Award, the Fain Cain Memorial Award in 2006 and the NFL Athletic Training Staff of the Year in 1986 and 2006. Mangum also received the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association's 1991 Backbone Award, which recognizes an outstanding assistant athletic trainer in the region. In 2015, he was the NFC recipient of the Tim Davey Assistant Athletic Trainer Award, as voted on by his NFL peers with the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society.

Prior to joining the Saints, Mangum was a student athletic trainer for two years at Southwest Mississippi Junior College (1978-79) and two more at the University of Southern Mississippi (1980-81). He received a bachelor's degree in athletic administration with a specialization in athletic training from USM in 1981 and an advanced degree in physical education from the University of New Orleans in 1988.

He and his wife, Susie, have five children, Katie, Megan, Scott, Kevin Paul, and Mark, and thirteen grandchildren (with another on the way in August), Emma, Jude, Camille, Luke, Audrey, George, Caroline, William, Benny, Elin, Clara, Brady and Cade.
