1. Saturday quick hits
Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. returned to practice fully after missing the last two days with a groin injury. --- Defensive end Cameron Jordan was not at practice Saturday with a prescheduled "vet day". --- Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed also was not at practice as Coach Dennis Allen described as “hamstring tightness.” He took the day off as a precautionary measure but Allen was hopeful that Shaheed would return for Sunday's morning practice. --- Red zone 7-on-7 and team periods were a big emphasis on Day 9, with the offense having its best day by far since the full pads went on four practices ago. --- Fifteen-year NFL referee Ron Torbert addressed the media covering the team after practice to discuss the new rules of emphasis for this upcoming NFL season. Specifically mentioned the dangerous hip drop tackle, the new "Dynamic" kickoff rule, and the new challenge rule. In the past, two replay challenges were available to head coaches. To receive a third challenge, both challenges had to be won. This season, a coach only has to win one of the two challenges to receive a third.
2. Offensive Day
Saturday was the day the Saints offense showed some teeth since the team has worked in full pads. Numerous big plays were recorded during 7-on-7 and team periods. Some highlights included were as follows… Quarterback Derek Carr threw a quick out to the right to wide receiver Chris Olave who had cornerback Paulson Adebo on him. Olave made the catch, cut inside to the left, then quickly cut back to the right, and outran Adebo for a 40-yard touchdown. Two plays later at the 25-yard line moving left to right, Carr dropped back as running back Alvin Kamara raced out of the backfield and headed to the right, sprinted past linebacker Pete Werner, and caught a perfectly thrown ball from Carr for an easy wheel route touchdown. Carr also ran a touchdown in during red zone team drills near the end of practice. Moving right to left at the four- yard line, Carr appeared to hand the ball off to Kamara up the middle, sucking in the entire defense. However, Carr pulled the ball back, and easily trotted into the end zone with no defender near him. Carr was pretty pumped up as he crossed the goal line a hurled the football onto the alternate practice field to the left. Wide receiver A.T. Perry caught a pair of touchdown passes, both from quarterback Spencer Rattler, on a 17-yard deep slant, and a 3-yard quick out to the right during red zone drills.
3. Play(s) of the Day
Pretty easy here. At first it was only going to be an offensive play until the very last rep of the regular practice until the final developmental period. In the sixth rep of the first team period and the ball at the 45-yard line of the offense, Carr dropped back after play-action and sat back in the pocket with great protection. He saw Olave streaking down the right side of the field with defensive coverage by cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Roderic Teamer. Olave was able to get behind both as Carr's pass traveled 55 yards in the air and Olave made the catch for the touchdown. It was the biggest offensive play of camp, and without question, the loudest cheers both from the team and the limited amount of friends and family that were in attendance Saturday. That play would've stood as POD until the final rep of practice. In a red zone drill and the ball at the 10-yard line moving right to left, Carr again had very good protection after play-action and tried to float one to the back right pylon of the end zone to wide receiver Stanley Morgan Jr., who was covered by Adebo. Then nickel cornerback Alontae Taylor moved from the middle of the end zone to his right, leaped and intercepted the pass at its highest point. That wouldn't be the end of it. Taylor then would sprint out of the end zone and down the right sideline untouched for what would have been recorded as a 100-yard touchdown, though technically he ran 107 yards from the west end zone to the east. Allen mentioned Taylor specifically after Friday's practice about Taylor buying in to either playing outside or in the slot. It was all about making plays, and he certainly made one there. It was a great way to end a very entertaining Day 9 of Saints training camp.
