1. Day 2 first team depth chart
I held off on doing this Wednesday just to watch a couple of practices and make sure there was consistency for two straight days. Yes, both days had the same group of players running with the ones on both sides of the ball. Obviously, during a training camp it's a fluid situation, but this is what we've witnessed in Irvine the first two days at UCI-Crawford Field. Offense: Quarterback-Derek Carr; running back-Alvin Kamara; fullback-Adam Prentice; wide receivers- Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed; left tackle-Taliese Fuaga; left guard-Nick Saldiveri; center-Erik McCoy; right guard-Cesar Ruiz; right tackle-Trevor Penning; tight end- Dallin Holker. Defense: Defensive end-Cam Jordan; defensive tackle-Nathan Shepherd; defensive tackle-Khalen Saunders; defensive end-Carl Granderson; linebackers-Pete Werner, Demario Davis, Willie Gay Jr.; cornerbacks-Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo; strong safety-Johnathan Abram; free safety-Tyrann Mathieu; Punter-Lou Hedley; kicker-Blake Grupe; holder-Lou Hedley.
2. New defenders
The signing of free agent defensive end Chase Young made headlines in the offseason. However, Young had offseason neck surgery which kept him out of OTAs and minicamp. Young is in Irvine now for camp and the coaches are easing him into the mix. He has participated in individual drills the first two days but is still being held out of team drills. The former Defensive Rookie of the Year is a physical specimen. At 6 feet 5, 265 pounds he has shown impressive quickness and agility the first couple of days. The fifth year veteran from Ohio State will be looked upon as an edge rusher heavily by this staff. What will be most interesting to see is how the staff handles his ramp up from individual drills to team drills, especially when the pads first come on Monday. The Saints have run their base 4-3-4 defense the first couple of days during team drills. One of those linebackers is Gay. Another physical football player, Gay has not looked like a typical linebacker at times. In the first couple of days, Gay has moved up to the line of scrimmage more often than not as an extra pass rusher/run stopper. Coach Dennis Allen mentioned post practice to the media Thursday that Gay's athletic ability should give the Saints the freedom to run their base defense more often than the strict nickel or dime which we see more and more in this day and age of the NFL. The emergence of both of these players will be a huge key to the success to a Saints defense that has been a tremendous unit since Allen has run it.
3. Play(s) of the Day
A couple of defensive plays stood out the most, both interceptions. In the second team period, with the offense moving left to right, quarterback Derek Carr dropped back after a nice play-action fake, looking for wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. around 20 yards over the middle. On the coverage step for step was Werner. The throw was a tad high, forcing Wilson go leap with outstretched arms to try and corral it in, which he was unable to do, instead tipping the ball up at the same time Werner was there as well. As the ball fluttered to the grass, it would not hit the deck, as Adebo was able to make the grab for an interception which he returned for about 20 yards, eliciting a yell from the entire defense. A few plays later, second-year quarterback Jake Haener looked to complete a deep middle route but the ball found the waiting arms of newly signed safety Roderic Teamer, who made a beautiful break on the ball for the interception in stride. Allen mentioned post practice that the former Brother Martin and Tulane Green Wave grad "made a helluva play" on the pick. A five-year NFL veteran, Teamer signed a couple of months ago as a free agent and plays like that, along with the ability to play special teams, are going to give him an advantage to make the 53-man roster.
