1. Wednesday quick hits
Quarterback Jake Haener returned to the practice field Wednesday and participated fully after missing Monday's practice with a procedure to remove a cancerous growth on his right cheek. --- Newly signed linebacker Mike Rose was initiated to the Saints defense as all newcomers by doing 40 up-downs prior to the individual portion of practice. Wearing No. 54, he participated fully with the third unit and even recorded a sack during a team period. --- Linebacker Demario Davis was working with trainers on the side field prior to practice. It was the first time we had seen Davis since he left practice last week with a hamstring injury. --- Also seen on the side field working with trainers was tight end Juwan Johnson and wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown. --- We have mentioned that the wind has been very consistent in Irvine since we arrived back on July 22, blowing from the south, southwest. The wind was at its strongest Wednesday since camp began at about 15 mph and at times affected the kicking game during kickoff drills and placekicking. --- As preparation for the first preseason game Saturday in Arizona continues, simulated crowd noise was present during the final two team periods and the red zone period at the end of practice. Unlike the past, two huge speakers were used instead of one, so basically double the noise. --- Native New Orleanian and former NBA World Champion Avery Johnson was at practice Wednesday and Coach Dennis Allen mentioned he would address the team on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson has a very positive history addressing the team in the past. Before the 2006 season when the Saints made their first NFC Championship appearance, before the 2009 season, and the morning of the Super Bowl in January 2010 which, of course, the Saints won. You can hear Johnson on Wednesday’s New Orleans Saints Podcast with Saints team reporter Erin Summers.
2. Big Play Perry
Since Rashid Shaheed has missed several practices now with hamstring tightness, the door has been opened for the other wide receivers to get more reps with the first team. After a bit of a slow start to his training camp, second year wideout A.T. Perry has stepped up his game. The Saints are a bit undersized at the wideout position, meaning Perry's 6-foot-5 205-pound frame gives the quarterbacks a bigger target to throw to. On Wednesday, Perry displayed some of his big-play ability. During 7-on-7 drills all three quarterbacks were able to connect with the Wake Forest product. Derek Carr found Perry on a safety valve route over the middle for positive yardage, Haener on a deep crossing route for a 40-yard touchdown to Perry, and Spencer Rattler on another deep middle route for 20 yards. During the second team period, after play-action, Haener found Perry on a deep sideline route out to the right for another 25- yard chunk play. Perry would wrap up his day during the team red zone drill near the end of practice catching a nifty sidearm flip from Haener in the back of the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown grab. Perry should have a lot of opportunities to make more big plays in the three preseason games.
3. Play of the Day
A few to choose from here, including the aforementioned 25-yard Perry catch from Haener during team and a deep route to the right during the second team period from Carr to Cedrick Wilson Jr. The award on Wednesday. however, will go to a play that took place during the "developmental period" as practice was nearing its conclusion. On the first play with Haener at quarterback and the offense moving left to right or west to east, Haener threw a deep middle ball to 6-7 tight end Michael Jacobson. Linebacker Isaiah Stalbird appeared to have good coverage on the tight end, until Jacobson (who was behind Stalbird) leaped up, reached over Stalbird's head and shoulders, and made the catch for a 20-yard gain, drawing a noisy reaction from the offense. Jacobson continues to make plays every single practice. The former Iowa State basketball player has been a favorite target of Rattler, especially during team periods, and Wednesday it was good to see Haener use Jacobson's size and ability to make the tough catch by allowing him the opportunity to make a play despite the good coverage.
