Saints Training Camp 2024: Key Takeaways from Wednesday, July 31

Team holds its longest practice of camp

1. Quick hits from Wednesday

Practice went from 9 a.m. PDT to 11:30 a.m., the longest to date. The New Orleans Saints were able to get different periods in that we haven't seen this camp. An interesting one was what I would describe as a fumble fire drill, where five players would line up on a faux line of scrimmage, do an up down, and then sprint to each sideline where a football was positioned on the chalk. The players would then hop over an obstacle and sprint to the ball seeing who could get to each ball first, as in what you would see in musical chairs. Truly entertaining stuff at the beginning of practice. ---- Wide receiver Chris Olave returned to the practice field fully participating after leaving practice early Tuesday after he landed on his hip. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore was also on the sideline watching practice wearing a hoodie and shorts. Lattimore has not participated since sustaining a hip flexor early in the third practice. Also seen working with a trainer on the side field was defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (foot) and tight end Juwan Johnson. ---With the extra time we witnessed four team periods, including at the very end of practice a period that Coach Dennis Allen deemed a "developmental period." As the first two teams were doing their conditioning work, an extra 10-12 reps were given to the third teams, giving the younger players more reps than they would normally get during a regular two-hour practice.

2. Good day for Alontae

Cornerback Alontae Taylor has gotten plenty of reps during the first seven practices. With the absence of Lattimore at the starting right cornerback slot, Taylor has gotten those first team reps along with Kool-Aid McKinstry or worked in the slot as the nickel corner. The third-year product out of Tennessee really showed out on Wednesday during receiver vs defensive back one-on-one drills. His first rep was against wide receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. in which Taylor registered a PBU (pass break up). Four more reps would come against Olave in which Taylor was able to get three more PBUs with extremely tight coverage before Olave won the final rep getting some separation on a short slant over the middle. The back and forth between the pair would carry on after the reps were complete, making it one of the best parts of Wednesday's practice. Taylor would wrap up his solid day during the first team period. After a big gain to running back Alvin Kamaraon a screen pass from Derek Carr on rep two, rep three didn't take that long to complete, as Taylor would come in clean on a corner blitz from the right side, registering a sack on Carr. Taylor continues to impress, and his versatility both out wide and in the slot has made him a big weapon on defense.

3. Play(s) of the Day

On offense, it took the sixth rep of the second team period. Carr was given outstanding protection by the offensive line (Fuaga, Udoh, Patrick, Ruiz, and Penning) as he rolled slightly to his left and sat there for seemingly minutes. As Carr looked back to his right, standing all alone on the right sideline 20 yards away was fullback Zander Horvath (the proud papa of brand new baby girl Lucille Ann), who had leaked out from the line of scrimmage after the snap. Horvath waited and easily made the catch with no defender within 20 years of him, and sprinted down the sideline for an easy touchdown of more than 60 yards. On defense, during the fourth team period, quarterback Jake Haener was pressured to his right by defensive end Payton Turner. Haener stepped up in the pocket and tried to complete a pass over the middle to wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. The pass was tipped twice about 15 yards away, and as the ball was nearing the grass, safety Roderic Teamer was able to corral it for an interception, his second pick during this training camp. Teamer has had solid reps working with the third unit on defense, and the five-year veteran from Tulane continues to look to earn a spot on the final 53-man roster.
