Former coach Curtis Johnson talks Super Bowl XLIV, UFL | Saints Podcast Rewind

Super Bowl LIX radio row interview recap with Curtis Johnson

Former New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson Jr. (2006-2011, 2017-2020) stopped by the Saints Podcast at radio row ahead of Super Bowl LIX to reminisce about the Super Bowl XLIV championship team as well as talk about his current job as the head coach of the Houston Roughnecks in the UFL.

One moment that stands out for Johnson was being on the sideline for Tracy Porter's game-sealing pick-six in that 31-17 victory against the Indianapolis Colts. Johnson said he can still see the moment.

"When you kind of look up, everybody was turning. They were looking. You can kind of hear the crowd yelling. We turn around, we see Tracy Porter on the scoreboard. I don't even think Sean (Payton) saw it at first, but then all of a sudden we all took off running. It was just the greatest, greatest moment, man," Johnson said. "Tracy made one of the best plays ever in football history."

Johnson said that Super Bowl XLIV victory is the "No. 1 by far" accomplishment in his career even over his national championship with the Miami Hurricanes in 2001. Johnson said the city came out in force to celebrate that Lombardi Trophy.

"I'm a New Orleans guy, I ride in the parades every year, but I thought the Super Bowl parade was the deepest I've ever seen. It was so far, it was so deep," Johnson said. "And here it is, it was the love. The people, you could just feel it. It was just so much love for us."

Johnson's season with the Roughnecks kicks off Friday, March 28 as they take on the St. Louis Battlehawks. Saints fans can expect to see a familiar face, former wide receiver Kirk Merritt, make an impact for Johnson's team in Houston this season.

"My team is a really good team, quick team," Johnson said. "We like to put pressure on guys, new quarterbacks. I'd say a guy went to Destrehan High School, Kirk Merritt, he's probably (one of) our best players. ... We moved Kirk to running back. ... We got some exciting players. It's an exciting league. You just got to tune in and watch. You're going to love some of the players and you'll be hearing about some of these guys next year."
