Lance Moore's football union with Kellen Moore was brief, confined to the offseason, training camp and preseason of 2015 with Detroit.
So Moore, a New Orleans Saints receiver from 2006-13, didn't have any of his 29 catches for 337 yards and four touchdowns that season from Moore, who was released after the final cuts of training camp and played his only NFL games that season in Dallas, where he started two of three games and completed 61 of 104 passes for 779 yards and four touchdowns, with six interceptions.
But Lance Moore is pretty sure the Saints got a good one in Kellen Moore when the latter was named the 19th head coach in franchise history Tuesday.
"He was a young kid, he was the third-string quarterback, he always seemed to be smart and know what he was doing," Lance Moore said. "When I was in the huddle with him – the few chances that I got – he seemed sharp and he seemed to be wiser beyond his years. So it's not a surprise to me that he is a really good coach.
"Can I sit here today and say he's going to be a great head coach for the Saints? No, because I don't know that and I don't think anybody knows that. But I do know that he is a very, very smart and detailed-oriented person. If anything, he's going to be somebody that's going to have that team prepared. I do know that about him from the short amount of time that we spent together."
Kellen Moore takes the helm of a Saints team that has missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons and finished 5-12 last year – 2-7 under Dennis Allen, who was fired Nov. 4, and 3-5 with interim head coach Darren Rizzi.
He enters the Ochsner Sports Performance Center with a sterling coaching resume, including offensive coordinator for the Eagles, who posted a 40-22 victory over Kanas City in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on Sunday.
Philadelphia ranked eighth in yards per game (367.2) and seventh in points (27.2). In four seasons (2019-22) as offensive coordinator in Dallas, the Cowboys were second overall in scoring (27.7 points) and offense (391 yards).
"I've not been around him in any coaching capacity to see how he operates in the room, to see the attention that he's able to command and keep from his peers, but if my experience with him is any indicator of the type of coach that he is and will be, then I think that we've made a really good decision," Lance Moore said.
"We got ourselves a good football coach and I think if we give him the opportunity to be really good, then I think he can be really good. But with the situation that we're in, I don't think it's an overnight fix. I think there's going to have to be some patience here. It's the National Football League and generally things don't change overnight."
Lance Moore said that Kellen Moore, the NFL's youngest coach at 36 (he'll turn 37 in July), never was out of his element in the huddle after having started in college at Boise State for four years and having spent 2012-14 in the Lions' organization after signing as an undrafted rookie.
And he said Kellen Moore won't be out of his element as Saints head coach.
"(The Rams') Sean McVay was the youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl (at 36, Super Bowl LVI)," Lance Moore said. "I mean, it happens a lot more nowadays than in the past as far as younger coaches getting opportunities to lead franchises.
"I don't know that there's necessarily concern. Maybe concern if it had never been done before, but he's a smart guy, he's going to surround himself with really good coaches. He's going to have support from the front office as far as getting things he needs to help make sure that his team is as prepared as possible. I just think that times have changed.
"I don't think it's necessary to have a guy that's been a head coach for a bunch of years or multiple times in the National Football League to have success. I think that being able to be creative, to have a thinker's mind and, obviously, be a leader as well – it doesn't really matter how old you are. I think Kellen's got the opportunity to be a really, really good head football coach."
