Derek Carr's contract restructuring helped the New Orleans Saints achieve the positional solidification they sought and pave the way for Carr to open his third season as the Saints' starting quarterback.

Carr, who will be entering his 12th NFL season, has completed 564 of 827 passes (68.2 percent) for 6,023 yards and 40 touchdowns, with 13 touchdowns, in 27 games (all starts) as a Saint. He missed seven games last season due to oblique and wrist injuries and a concussion.

"I think we've been consistent through this whole process," Saints first-year coach Kellen Moore said Monday. "We feel really good about Derek and we're excited to team up with him and the things that he can do for us.

"We want him here, and it'll be a good situation."

On the day Moore was announced as head coach, he said he first wanted to meet with Carr and get to know the quarterback, before any decisions were made. Having done that, Moore and Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis revealed at the Scouting Combine in February that Carr would start at quarterback in 2025.

While calling the contract restructure the "business side of it," Moore said there's a belief that successful path can be created for Carr and the Saints offense, which last season averaged 320.1 yards per game (21st) and 19.9 points (tied for 24th).

"I think we've got a great group here – from the players, the coaching staff, to the environment that we're going to be able to create for him," Moore said.

"Obviously, we felt very comfortable with him. Any time you go through these things it's great to connect first as people and build those relationships and go from there."

Members of the local media had a chance to meet the new additions to the New Orleans Saints coaching staff at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Monday, March 10, 2025 ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
