Irvine, Calif. – Sunday was the third consecutive practice that linebacker Demario Davis has missed, but Coach Dennis Allen said the absence of the five-time All-Pro is more precautionary than necessary.

"Guys like Demario, I'm not overly concerned," Allen said. "Demario's situation is probably a lot more precautionary on our part, being that we are in training camp. Knowing Demario, if we were to get ready for a regular season game, I don't think that we'd be missing him out here (at practice). Part of that's us. We've got to judge that based on who the player is.

"A young player that's dealing with some soft tissue discomfort or discomfort issue, those guys really can't afford to miss a lot of time. A guy like Demario has proven time and time again that he can go out and function at a high level, and he has functioned at a high level a lot of times with things like he has right now."

Meanwhile, linebacker Pete Werner (shoulder), defensive end Payton Turner (toe) and defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd (toe) missed practice Sunday. Cornerback Paulson Adebo (groin) gave it a go but couldn't fully participate, while safety Tyrann Mathieu and quarterback Taysom Hill both had vet days and didn't participate in team drills.

TWO-MINUTE GOLD: The Saints practiced their two-minute drill entering halftime Sunday and scored two touchdowns in three opportunities. Each possession began with the offense at its own 30-yard line, with 1:40 on the clock and one timeout. The first scoring drive was led by starting quarterback Derek Carr , who threw back-to-back, tight-window completions to receivers Cedric Wilson Jr. and Mason Tipton. Tipton touched the right front pylon but the official ruled he was out at the 1, so running back Jamaal Williams finished the drive with a plunge. On the third possession, quarterback Jake Haener connected on a deep pass down the middle to Stanley Morgan Jr., which also drew a personal foul at the goal line and led to another rushing score.

"I thought overall the offensive execution was pretty good," Allen said. "We were able to get a couple of touchdowns offensively at the end of the first half, and there's a lot that goes into that. It's not just about going and scoring touchdowns, we're trying to manage the game, too. I thought offensively we did some good things and yet I think there's some things that we've got to teach off of there that could have negated our ability to score points in that situation."

BITS AND PIECES: Second-year defensive tackle Bryan Bresee has unleashed a spin move that has been almost unblockable in one-on-one drills. Blocker expects power, Bresee hits him with a spin as the blocker backpedals and Bresee's spin has been too quick to get clean hands on him. … The screen pass continues to be an effective attack for the Saints' offense. On Sunday, quarterback Spencer Rattler and running back James Robinson connected on one for a long gainer, and another beautifully executed one from Carr to running back Alvin Kamara was negated because of an illegal lineman downfield…Rattler may have thrown the best completion of the day, a backpedaling drop-in-the-bucket pass to receiver A.T. Perry probably 25 yards downfield. Perry picked the pass off the top of Ugo Amadi's helmet, but it wasn't all rainbows and rose petals. Safety J.T. Gray came over to strip the ball out; fortunately for Perry, the defender who recovered had a foot out of bounds, allowing the offense to maintain possession.

MONDAY: The Saints return to practice Monday in full pads (Sunday was in shells) before Tuesday's scheduled off day. Haener is not expected to practice, as he is expected to have a procedure performed relating to his skin cancer.
