Irvine, Calif. – Growing up on a family farm in Spartanburg, S.C., taught D'Marco Jackson at least one valuable lesson.

"Really, just hard work," he said after Sunday's 150-minute practice. "You're really just picking up every day and just going to work, not looking at what day it is, what's on the schedule, just getting to work."

Sounds a lot like training camp at Cal-Irvine for the New Orleans Saints' third-year linebacker, and his workload has increased since starter Demario Davis left practice early Wednesday with a hamstring injury. Davis hasn't yet been cleared to return.

Jackson is beginning to feel comfortable in his Saints skin and it has shown the last several practices, as he has taken more reps with the starters and routinely has been in the middle of run-stopping efforts by the defense.

Two years in the system have helped the former Appalachian State standout look more like the player the Saints drafted than the one who was more unsure with his assignments in previous seasons.

"When you know the system better, you're able to put your focus to more things or concepts and tips," the 6-foot-1, 233-pounder said. "Instead of learning where you've got to be, Xs and Os, you're more so worried about actually reading the offense more.

"It's more reps, and it's more opportunity for you to learn from your mistakes and not make the same ones. That's a big thing in this league. And really, just having the time to work with different players, creating that chemistry and growing together."

And doing his part to help the linebacker corps grow into its "Coffee Boys" nickname.

"Really, just making sure we bring the juice, the expresso, every day," Jackson said. "Making sure we're that expresso shot. Some days you might not be feeling it, but we've got to have that standard in our room to elevate everybody else. Everybody feeds off what we're putting out there, on making the calls and everything like that."
