Saints Training Camp 2024: Key Takeaways from Sunday, Aug. 4

Carr impressive in two-minute drill

1. Sunday quick hits

After five straight practices in full pads, the New Orleans Saints went back to shells (helmets and shorts) Sunday, but will go back to full pads for Monday morning's practice. --- Defensive end Cameron Jordan returned to practice after missing Saturday with a vet day. --- Saints who missed Sunday's practice that were injury related, Rashid Shaheed (hamstring), Pete Werner (shoulder), Payton Turner (toe), Nathan Shepherd (toe), Paulson Adebo (groin tightness), Marshon Lattimore (hip flexor), Demario Davis (hamstring), Kendre Miller (hamstring). Taysom Hill and Tyrann Mathieu missed with a vet days and Oli Udoh with injury maintenance. --- Kicker Charlie Smythdrilled a 62-yard field goal from west to east that would have been good from 70 yards out. However, he did miss two extra points, one during two-minute drill after a touchdown by the first team unit. --- There were two separate water breaks during practice, which we haven't seen up to this point. The weather in Irvine has been the warmest since we arrived 13 days ago, with temps climbing into the mid 80s by the end of practice.

2. Two-minute drill

For the first time in the now 10 training camp practices, the Saints ran a two-minute offense/defense during the final team period. The situation going in, end of the first half, 1:40 on the clock, one timeout remaining, ball on the 30-yard line, moving west to east, or right to left as we viewed it. The first and third team offenses (with Derek Carr and Jake Haener at quarterback) were able to get into the end zone, while the second team (with Spencer Rattler at quarterback), saw its drive end at the plus-25 as the clock ran out after Rattler threw the ball in the middle of the field to Jordan Mims with 13 seconds left but were unable to line back up in time after the tackle to clock the ball. The first team capped off their five-play drive on a 1-yard run by Jamaal Williams with 53 seconds left on the clock. The third team scored on an eight-play drive capped off on another 1-yard run, this time by Jacob Kibodi, with 15 seconds left on the clock. The big play on that drive was a deep slant throw by Haener from the plus 25-yard line to wide receiver Stanley Morgan Jr, who made the tough catch at the 5-yard line, then moved up half the distance to the goal line after a personal foul penalty by Shemar Jean-Charles. Two plays later Kibodi scored.

3. Play of the Day

We're going to give the honor to the entire drive by Carr and the first team offense during the two-minute drill, despite a penalty during the drive. First down from the 30, pass to tight end Foster Moreau for five yards. Second down, timing route to the left side to Chris Olave, who worked his way up the sideline and went out of bounds at the 48-yard line. First down, pass to Alvin Kamara, negated by a holding call on Olave, move the ball back to the minus 40. First down, quick pass to Jamaal Williams who stepped out of bounds at the 47-yard line with 1:11 left on the clock. Second down, a great ball from Carr to Cedrick Wilson Jr who cut across the middle of the field and stepped out of bounds at the plus 33-yard line. First down (and our alternate play of the day), Carr uncorked a perfect deep ball down the right sideline where wide receiver Mason Tipton had beaten Shemar Jean-Charles by a couple of steps. Tipton made the catch and appeared to score at the front right pylon of the east end zone but was ruled down at the 1-yard line. The next play Williams went easily up the middle for the touchdown, capping off a most efficient and impressive two-minute drill.
