The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons entered Sunday's game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome fresh off of a mid-season bye. The Saints looked to extend their six-game win streak, while the division rival Atlanta Falcons were in search of their first victory since Week 2. It was the Falcons' defensive line that came to play, helping propel Atlanta to their first victory in eight weeks.

The result: a convincing 26-9 victory for the Atlanta Falcons (2-7). New Orleans (7-2) still sits atop the NFC South and will travel to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-6) next week.

"Collectively we have to be better and it starts with me," Coach Sean Payton said in his postgame press conference.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who returned from thumb surgery in Week 8 vs. Arizona, was sacked six times, the most the team has allowed this season. The Falcons entered the game with seven sacks. After scoring on their opening possession for the first time this season (the first of three Wil Lutz field goals), the Saints failed to establish a rhythm offensively, leading to their lowest point total this season.

"Obviously, nine points is not what we aspire to score, especially at home," said Brees. "The result today, offensively, was not where it needed to be."

Penalties also plagued the Saints as they committed 12 penalties for 90 yards.

The one bright spot for the Saints came right before halftime, when wideout Michael Thomas became the fastest player to record 400 career receptions. Thomas achieved the feat in 56 games, surpassing Odell Beckham Jr. who reached 400 receptions in 61 games. He finished with 13 receptions for 152 yards and has 86 receptions for 1,027 yards this season.

Running back Alvin Kamara returned to the lineup and carried the call four times for 24 yards and caught eight passes for 50 yards.

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore and offensive tackle Andrus Peat left the game with injuries in the first half and did not return.
