Inside the Game: Saints vs Cardinals series history

The Saints and Cardinals have played 29 times in the regular season, with the Saints trailing 14-15, following a 48-41 victory at University of Phoenix Stadium on December 18, 2016. The Saints have also captured the only postseason meeting, a 45-14 win on January 16, 2010 in the NFC Divisional Playoff. The Cardinals won the first three games in the series, including both played in 1968 when the they were in the NFL Century division. The Saints won their first game against the Cardinals on Nov. 2, 1969, 5142 at Busch Stadium. The game still stands as the most points between two clubs in team history. The clubs combined for 80 points on Oct. 23, 1977 at St. Louis in a 49-31 Cardinals win. In another memorable contest, the Saints beat the Cardinals 14-0 on Dec. 8, 1974 in the team's final contest played at Tulane Stadium. In the 2016 match-up, the Saints got their first win at University of Phoenix Stadium in three tries. In the preseason, the Saints have a 5-0 edge over the Cardinals, the only preseason opponent they have an undefeated record against. The Saints and the Cardinals have played their five different preseason contests in five different venues. On August 12, 1967, they defeated the then St. Louis franchise 23-14 in a contest played in Shreveport. On August 9, 1980, New Orleans defeated St. Louis 17-13 at the Superdome. On August 12, 1988, the Saints defeated the Cardinals 33-28 at Sun Devil Stadium in their first season in Arizona. On August 7, 2008, the Saints routed the Cardinals 24-10 at University of Phoenix Stadium. In their most recent preseason meeting, the Saints defeated the Cardinals 17-10 in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on August 5, 2012.
