The New Orleans Saints mourn the loss of Ken Saer, the team's first team physician and orthopedist. Dr. Saer joined the franchise at its inception in 1967 and served in the position for 24 years. He died on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the age of 94.
"Dr. Saer embodied the spirit and resilience that define our city and our organization. His commitment to our players and his pioneering work as our first team physician and orthopedist established a legacy of exemplary care for our players," Saints Owner Gayle Benson said. "His legacy will always be a part of the Saints family, and he will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time."
Dr. Saer earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University, where he also taught, and was seen as a pioneer in the developing field of sports medicine. Highly respected across the country, Saer was also part of the original group of the AFL-NFL Professional Football Trainers and Physicians Association. Known today as the National Football League Physicians Society (NFLPS), the NFLPS leverages new technologies and helps institute rule changes to respond to on-field injuries smarter and faster. He was also a member of the Southern Orthopedic Specialists, which has provided citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf South region with access to the highest quality orthopedic and advancements in musculoskeletal care for over seven decades.
Dr. Saer is survived by his wife, Meredith, two sons, Robert and John, three daughters, Shaun, Margaret, and Penny, two stepsons, Robert and Mitchum, one stepdaughter, Melanie, and 14 grandchildren. A Mass will be said Friday at noon at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home will handle arrangements
