Quotes from Drew Brees following the week 14 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Drew Brees spoke to the media following the week 14 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Dec. 9

QUARTERBACK DREW BREES

(On the significance of back-to-back division championships)

"Each season stands alone, right? I feel like it's building blocks. Last year was a building block for this year. Obviously, we still have a lot of work left ahead of us, but goal number one was to win the division, win the division again. We were able to do that. I like the way we won this game. We didn't play too well in the first half. Obviously, we came in with a big deficit and were able to come together with all sides making plays in that second half. It was a great team win. I think that was the epitome of a great team win."

(On the importance of the blocked punt)

"Listen, you call those momentum-changing plays, right? I think we all recognize that when you have those games where you're struggling to get things going and just need one thing to just ignite the team, ignite the sideline and get you going. Obviously, that was a huge play in the game, because we go down and score a touchdown and I think scored on every possession after that."

(On his rushing touchdown)

"It was big. That was to take the lead, right? So, we needed that one or maybe it was just to extend the lead. Regardless, it was a huge play in the game. Seven points is much better than three, especially in a game like that."

(On the strategy behind his rushing touchdown)

"I'd say it's a feel-play. You feel the way the game's going and then obviously you have a choice of a lot of plays down there. You just pick and choose your moments."

(On the key to his rushing touchdown)

"I guess a good vertical."

(On the offensive struggles in the first half)

"We didn't run the ball as well as we wanted to in the first half. I don't know what our numbers ended up being, but it just felt like there wasn't a whole lot of balance. Penalties stopped us on the first drive; we got into third-and-long. We got into another third-and-long on that second drive; I can't remember why. If we can be in good third-and-manageable situations, which means good first and second down efficiency, then we typically put good drives together and go down and get points."

(On the play of the defense the past few weeks)

"They've been playing great. It's fun. We feed off them and I hope they feed off us at times and obviously special teams coming up with big plays in key moments too. It's a team effort and today was a great team win."

(On bouncing back from his two turnovers)

"It was kind of fluke deals. One of them was on a screen pass and the other one, you just get tomahawked in the backfield. You just play fast and make good decisions and all that stuff takes care of itself."

(On his sense for the goal line during his rushing touchdown)

"Yeah, I think I do. You just extend it as far as you can."

(On whether he knows how long his arms are)

"At some point, I think I did that math equation. I don't think my arms have grown or shrunk, so I think we're good."

(On the postgame celebration clinching the division this year compared to last year)

"Yeah, we vamped it up even more. This is what guys look forward to. This is fun and this is the stuff you remember, especially road games, road locker rooms, bus rides, back on the plane and just those moments together. It's hard to win in this league. It's hard to win on the road, so we're going to enjoy these moments and continue to build on them."
