New Orleans Saints cornerback P.J. Williams has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Williams, a 6-foot, 196-pounder in his fourth season with the Saints, was involved in two game-changing defensive plays in the Saints' 30-20 victory at the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. In the first half, he combined with linebacker Alex Anzalone for a high-low hit on Vikings receiver Adam Thielen that caused a fumble which cornerback Marshon Lattimore returned 54 yards. The Saints scored on a 1-yard Alvin Kamara run two plays later in the second half.
In the second half Williams intercepted Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown that made it 27-13 Saints.
The award is the first of Williams' career.
