Saints Training Camp 2024: Key Takeaways for Monday, Aug. 5

Carr-to-Olave connection building

1. Monday quick hits

Defensive end Payton Turner and defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd both returned to Monday's padded practice after missing Sunday's practice with toe injuries and participated fully. --- Taysom Hill and Tyrann Mathieu returned also after missing Sunday with vet days. --- Running back Alvin Kamara missed Monday's practice with a vet day. – Quarterback Jake Haener was also not present as his procedure to a remove a non-life threatening cancerous growth on the right side of his face was scheduled for Monday. He is expected to return to practice on Wednesday after Tuesday's team day off. --- With Haener out, the Saints practiced with just two quarterbacks Monday, with rookie Spencer Rattler receiving all of the reps that Haener would have received had he been there. --- Former Saints fullback Mike Karney was in attendance. Karney played for the Saints from 2004-2008 and is best remembered for his three touchdown performance against the Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football" in December 2006, and was named All-Pro following that season. --- Kicker Blake Grupe connected from 61 yards on his final kick during the kicking period. Grupe and Charlie Smyth have now made kicks of over 60 yards the last two days, with a slightly helping cross breeze from right to left.

2. Two-minute drill part 2

During Sunday's practice the Saints used the final period of practice to work on the two-minute offense/defense for the first time. On Monday, same concept with some changes. Instead of end of first half, it was end of the game, with the team trailing 30-28 needing a field goal to win. Ball at the minus 30-yard line, now with 1:10 left on the clock and one timeout. Quarterback Derek Carr looked in control as he did Sunday and was able to lead the offense on an eight-play drive culminating in a 48-yard Grupe field goal. The second team also moved the ball effectively getting into field goal range. Rattler used his favorite target, second-year tight end and former basketball player Michael Jacobson, twice in the drive, including a 19-yard pass over the middle that set the offense up into field- goal territory. After two consecutive running plays to the plus 29-yard line Rattler took his timeout to set up a Grupe winning kick from 46 yards. Unfortunately, Grupe's kick drifted in the right to left crosswind and doinked off the left upright and fell to the Bermuda grass no good.

3. Play of the Day

This play occurred during the first two-minute drive. At midfield, the offense was playing a third-and-five. Defensive tackle Bryan Bresee pressured Carr out of the pocket, forcing him to roll right and throw the ball away and out of bounds. That set up a do-or-die play for the offense, fourth-and-5 with 22 seconds left. Carr dropped back, had time to throw and found a wide open Chris Olave in the middle of the field for 18 yards to the plus 32. The offense would then take a timeout with 17 seconds left. A running play by Jordan Mims for a couple of yards and a clocked ball by Carr with 1 second left would set up Grupe's winning kick but it was the Carr-to-Olave connection that kept the drive alive. It has been most evident the last few practices that the chemistry and trust between Carr and Olave is increasing with every rep. The majority of Carr's completions during team periods always seem to be headed in Olave's direction, and for the most part, Olave keeps delivering, including on Monday when it counted the most.
