Drew Brees on Tom Benson: 'There's no better owner'

Coach Sean Payton gives longtime Saints owner game ball following road playoff win

The New Orleans Saints have accomplished many firsts since Tom Benson bought the franchise in 1985.

First winning season.

First division title.

First playoff victory.

First NFC championship game appearance.

First Super Bowl title.

Saturday’s 26-24 wild-card victory over the Philadelphia Eagles allowed the longtime owner of the Saints to check off another box on his to-do list – first road playoff victory. Saints Coach Sean Payton brought up Mr. Benson in his postgame remarks to the team and marked the milestone by giving Mr. Benson a game ball on the team plane, a moment which was greeted by a loud ovation from the players and staff.

"Yeah, I'm really happy for Mr. B.," Saints quarterback said Saturday evening during his postgame session with the media. "Obviously, being the first road playoff win in Saints history. It's nice when you can continue to accomplish first or do those types of things that makes it even more satisfying, gratifying, especially for an owner like Mr. Benson who has owned the team for 25-plus years, been through a lot. There's no better owner as far as just putting us in every position possible to succeed. We know how much he cares about the team. He cares about our players and our coaches and it's great to get this one for him."
