New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has signed guard Patrick Omameh and released wide receiver Cameron Meredith.
Omameh, 6 feet 5, 327 pounds, originally was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2013 out of Michigan. The Columbus, Ohio native has played in 67 career games with 56 starts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014), Chicago Bears (2015), Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-18) and New York Giants (2018). In 2018, Omameh played in seven games with five starts at right guard for the Giants and in the second half of the season appeared in seven contests with five starts at left guard for the Jaguars.
Meredith came to the Saints as a restricted free agent on April 6, 2018. An injury-riddled 2018 overshadowed the productive season Meredith had with the Bears in 2016, when he amassed 888 receiving yards, 66 catches and four touchdowns in 14 games. Meredith appeared in just six games with one start for the Saints, hauling in nine catches for 114 yards and one touchdown.
"The injury he had set him back and these younger guys now have been doing a good enough job," Saints Coach Sean Payton said Monday at his post-practice press conference. "It's unfortunate because he's someone that has worked hard, he's worked his tail off. And yet, it was going to be hard for him to catch this group of younger guys that are competing."
Meredith, 26, missed the entire 2017 season in Chicago after tearing his left ACL and suffering other knee ligament damage during the preseason.
