Saints start the preseason 3-0 for the first time since 2009

*The Saints start the preseason 3-0 for the first time since 2009, when they ended up 3-1. They will wrap up the 2013 preseason on Thursday, August 29, when they travel to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. to face the Miami Dolphins. The game will be regionally televised on CST and WVUE FOX 8 with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff central standard time.

*Along with 2009, this is the second time since Sean Payton became head coach that the Saints have started 3-0 in the preseason. If the Saints win at Miami on Thursday, they would finish undefeated in the preseason for the first time in franchise history.

*The Saints now lead the all-time preseason series against the Texans 4-3.

*New Orleans successfully converted six-of-11 (55%) third down attempts.

*QB Drew Brees started and played until midway through the second quarter, completing four of six passes for 104 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of 149.3. In one two-drive stretch covering the first and second quarters, Brees completed nine consecutive passes.

*QB Luke McCown entered the game in relief of Brees in the second quarter and played through the first drive of the third quarter, completing 10 of 14 passes for 118 yards with two touchdown passes and a 136.3 passer rating.

*Rookie QB Ryan Griffin relieved McCown midway through the third quarter completed eight of 13 passes for 86 yards with a 15-yard touchdown pass to WR Andy Tanner.

*RB Pierre Thomas in his first action of the preseason, got the start and carried four times for 19 yards, but his biggest play of the afternoon came when he converted a pass from Brees into a 51-yard touchdown.

*RB Mark Ingram saw extensive action in the first half and had four carries for 24 yards and two catches for 28 yards, including a 29-yard reception.

*RB Travaris Cadet carried four times for 16 yards (4.0 avg.) and had three receptions for 37 yards in the second half.[internal-link-placeholder-0]

*WR Kenny Stills had a spectacular one-handed 40-yard reception from McCown in the second quarter above Texans CB Kareem Jackson. Later on the drive, he and McCown connected on a 14-yard touchdown. He finished with two catches for 54 yards.

*Tanner had second half touchdown receptions of eight- and 15 yards, for an afternoon where he finished with three catches for 33 yards.

*WR Preston Parker brought back the opening kickoff of the second half back 52 yards, setting up a New Orleans touchdown.

*On the Texans' first drive of the third quarter, RB Deji Karim was stuffed by ILB Ramon Humber for no gain on a fourth and one play at the New Orleans one-yard line. Humber finished with five solo tackles.

*DE Cameron Jordan recorded three tackles (two solo) and a key third down sack of Texans QB Matt Schaub early in the second quarter to force a field goal.

*ILB David Hawthorne got the start in place on an injured Jonathan Vilma and posted four tackles (three solo), one pass defense on a near-interception and one forced fumble.

*Rookie DE Glenn Foster recorded a second quarter sack of Schaub for a one-yard loss. Foster now has four sacks in the preseason to rank second in the NFL behind Indianapolis Colts rookie LB Caesar Rayford's five takedowns.

*Rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro, the Saints' first-round pick in April's NFL Draft, led the Saints with six tackles (five solo).

*K Garrett Hartley drilled a 51-yard field goal in the second quarter, making him a perfect five-of-five in the preseason.
