Sean Kelley's key takeaways from Friday's Saints practice

Final day without pads

White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. - Perfect weather for day two of New Orleans Saints training camp practice Friday. The players were not in full pads. Here are some takeaways from the 2-hour, 20-minute session.

  1. The defensive secondary continues to play well getting its hands on several balls. The front seven followed suit with a couple of its own. With linebacker Dannell Ellerbe out Friday, rookie Stephone Anthony worked primarily with the first team as the Mike linebacker. Hau'oli Kikaha also played with the first team and worked both on pass coverage and rushing off the edge.
  1. I don't think there's a spot on the field where Brandin Cooks has not caught a pass during the first two practices. Clearly the Saints are willing to line him up anywhere and send him wherever to work open space. The same goes for C.J. Spiller.
  1. It's going to be back and forth in the battle for backup quarterback. Ryan Griffin had a very good first practice, but dropped a bit today. Luke McCown was the better QB Friday.
  1. Full team periods focused on first down and the run game for the most part. There were also large portions of practice dedicated to special teams, especially kickoff return and coverage.
