New Orleans Saints Training Camp 2015 presented by Verizon continued at the team's training facility on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The practice begins a run of four straight leading toward Sunday's preseason game with the Houston Texans. The first round of roster cuts are right around the bend. Here are some observations:
- The defensive secondary grabbed most of my attention. Keenan Lewis, Delvin Breaux and Kenny Vaccaro returned to full participation. Lewis joined Brian Dixon for some of the bigger pass breakups of the day. Stanley Jean-Baptiste pulled down an interception as he continues to take a heavy load of reps with the first-team defense. The defensive backs, and the defense in general, shined in team periods which featured various blitz packages.
- Speaking of defensive backs, I'll be keeping an eye on Pierre Warren this week. Warren played well last Saturday against the Patriots and recorded an interception late in the game. Warren is making a play at being a backup at free safety. He is getting plenty of chances so far this week to build on his recent game and make his case for making the roster again.
- Wide receiver Brandon Coleman had a touchdown pass get knocked out his hands last Saturday night. It happened again Tuesday on another ball thrown by Drew Brees. Coleman has the size and speed to become a very good NFL receiver. When Coleman struggles less in traffic, and consistently clamps down on those contested passes, watch out. It's going to happen.
