Sean Payton spoke to USA Today’s Jarrett Bell at length Monday afternoon about the death of former Saints Team Captain Will Smith.

Payton spoke about visiting the Smith family at the hospital, visting the scene of the murder and the length he went into researching about the weapon used in the crime.

The Saints coach also said he planned to bring Smith in as a coaching intern this summer.

"I know (Smith) loved this city and I know he was going to be a heck of a coach," Payton told USA Today. "He had such a presence about him. Not only would he have made the transition to be a great defensive line coach, he had all the tools to become a head coach.

"We just don't get to see those chapters. All the chapters before now were great. But it's sad that we won't see the next chapters."
