New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been named the Week 17 NFLPA Community MVP after he and his wife Heather hosted nine families for a holiday meal and provided them with presents at the Salvation Army on Dec. 21, 2024. At the end of the evening, Carr surprised each family with a gift of $5,000.
"I was shocked when I found out about my nomination for this award," the quarterback said to the NFLPA. "While certainly honored, the reason Heather and I did this was the realization of being able to help people in need, especially during the holidays. I was just doing what I felt the Lord wants us to do in these situations, with what He has provided for us."
For being named Community MVP, the NFLPA will make a $10,000 donation to the foundation or charity of Carr's choice. In turn, Carr will take part in a special visit to a local school, children's hospital or community center.
Along with the other 2024-25 Community MVPs, Carr will also be eligible for the Alan Page Community Award, the NFLPA's highest player honor and includes an additional $100,000 donation. Carr is the second Saints player to receive the recognition this season as linebacker Demario Davis was named the Week 8 Community MVP by the NFLPA.
"We just wanted to come bless you guys," Carr said to the recipients of his gifts at the Salvation Army. "The Lord has blessed us tremendously just playing a game that I loved when I was a little kid. We just wanted to come here and bless everybody with some presents and some gifts."
The surprise of $5,000 at the end of the event even left some of the recipients in tears.
"It's crazy that a game can do that to where you can help so many people, so we are thankful for that and what a blessing just to be around there, these families and these children, and to be able to be a part of their Christmas," Carr said.
This was not the only community work the Saints signal caller has done. One day after sustaining a hand injury as well as a concussion during the game against the New York Giants, he and teammate Taysom Hill delivered presents and visited with Ochsner Health Center patients during their holiday party at Loft 18 on Dec. 9, 2024.
Earlier in the year, Carr joined the team in promoting health and safety in football by donating guardian caps to the East Jefferson High School football team and spent time talking with them on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
The 11-year veteran has regularly done community work to benefit children which serves as the inspiration behind his foundation, DC4Kids.
Carr, alongside Davis, also hosted a Night of Worship at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre on June 11, 2024.
In May, he and his brother David, who played 10 seasons in the NFL, donated $250,000 to Valley Children’s Healthcare in Fresno, Calif., in support of its community health initiatives.
