Saints add veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to active roster

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has signed free agent wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (first name pronounced mar-KWEZ). In a corresponding move, the club has placed cornerback Paulson Adebo on Injured Reserve (leg). The Saints have also signed safety Roderic Teamer and defensive back Shemar Jean-Charles to the practice squad and terminated the practice squad contracts of safety Johnathan Abram and guard Chris Reed.

Valdes-Scantling, 6-4, 206, is a seven-year NFL veteran who was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of South Florida by the Green Bay Packers. In six seasons with the Packers (2018-21), Kansas City Chiefs (2022-23) and the Buffalo Bills (2024), Valdez-Scantling has played in 98 regular season games with 60 starts with career totals of 188 receptions for 3,181 yards (16.9 avg.) and 16 touchdowns. Valdes-Scantling has also rushed nine times for 48 yards and returned a kickoff for 21 yards. In 11 postseason contests with seven starts for the Packers and Chiefs, he recorded 24 receptions for 406 yards (16.9 avg.) with four touchdowns.

In 2024, Valdes-Scantling played in six games with the Bills and had two receptions for 26 yards. In 2023, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native played in 16 games with ten starts for the Super Bowl Champion Chiefs and caught 21 passes for 315 yards (15.0 avg.) with one touchdown. He played in all four postseason contests with three starts and recorded eight receptions for 128 yards (16.0 avg.) with one touchdown.

Valdes-Scantling played in 25 games with 23 starts in two seasons at South Florida from 2016-17, posting 75 receptions for 1,294 yards (17.3 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. He started his college career at North Carolina State (2013-14), where he played in 23 games and caught 44 passes for 538 yards and one touchdown.

Teamer, 6-0, 205, re-joins the Black and Gold after spending 2024 training camp with New Orleans. The four-year NFL veteran was originally signed by the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane in 2019. In his career, he has appeared in 40 regular season games with 11 starts for the Chargers (2019) and Las Vegas Raiders (2021-23), recording 93 tackles (67 solo), one sack, three stops for loss, one interception, three pass breakups and ten special teams stops.

A New Orleans native who was a high school standout at Brother Martin, Teamer played in six games in 2023 for the Raiders and had four tackles (three solo) with one special teams stop. In 2022, he played in every game for the first time in his career with three starts for Las Vegas, finishing with 35 tackles (23 solo), a career-high two stops for loss, one pass breakup and a career-high five special teams stops.

Teamer played four seasons at Tulane (2015-18), appearing in 46 games and totaling 197 tackles (128 solo), three sacks, three interceptions, 15 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. As a senior in 2018, he finished with 72 tackles (45 solo), one sack, interception, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble, as the Green Wave won their first bowl game since 2002.

Jean-Charles (pronounced John Charles), 5-10, 184, also re-joins the Saints after spending 2024 training camp with the club and Weeks Two-Six on New Orleans' practice squad. The four-year veteran was originally selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round (178th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Appalachian State and has played in 28 regular season games for the Packers (2021-22), San Francisco 49ers (2023) and Saints (2023), making three solo tackles and 12 special teams stops. In 2023, the Miramar, Fla. native played in five games for the 49ers and three for the Saints and was credited with one solo tackle and three special teams stops for San Francisco.

Jean-Charles played in 50 games with 25 starts at Appalachian State and registered 97 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He started 12 games as a senior in 2020 and registered 37 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception, earning first-team All-Sun Belt honors and Sun Belt Player of the Year honors from Pro Football Focus.
