New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced that the club has agreed to terms with defensive end Chase Young on a three-year contract extension.
Young, 6-5, 264, is a five-year NFL veteran who was originally selected by the Washington Commanders with the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. In five seasons with Washington (2020-23), the San Francisco 49ers (2023) and New Orleans (2024), the 2020 Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has appeared in 60 regular season games with 32 starts and recorded 131 tackles (88 solo), 22.0 sacks for a loss of 117 yards, 28 stops for a loss, 12 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown. In four postseason games played, Young has started each contest and recorded 11 tackles (seven solo), one sack, and two stops for a loss.
After Young signed with New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent in the 2024 offseason, the Upper Marlboro, Md. native played in all 17 contests for New Orleans and was a key contributor on the edge, posting 31 tackles (21 solo), 5.5 sacks for a loss of 29.5 yards, a career-high 21 quarterback hits, eight stops for a loss, one forced fumble and three pass breakups. According to Pro Football Focus, Young finished last season with 66 quarterback pressures, tied for seventh among all edge defenders.
In three seasons at Ohio State (2017-2019), Young appeared in 34 games, racking up 98 tackles (68 solo), 30.5 sacks, 40.5 stops for a loss, nine forced fumbles and eight pass breakups. His 30.5 takedowns rank second all-time in school history. In his final campaign as a Buckeye, Young was the nucleus of Ohio State's defense, leading the country and setting school records in sacks (16.5) and sack yards (117) on his way to being selected a unanimous All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, one of just ten defensive players to be a finalist for the award since 1982.
