New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defensive end Chris Rumph II on a one-year contract.
- In his three previous seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Rumph accumulated 29 tackles (17 solo), 3.0 sacks, one pass defensed and a one fumble recovery. He also tallied 15 pressures. Rumph missed the 2024 campaign due to a foot injury.
- Rumph reunites with defensive coordinator Brandon Staley who worked as Chargers head coach from 2021-2023. Rumph also re-joins former teammate center/guard Will Clapp who was on the Chargers roster for 2022 and 2023.
- Drafted by the Chargers out of Duke in the fourth round (118th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, Rumph was a two-time All-ACC performer in 2019 and 2020 and accrued 125 tackles, 34.0 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, five pass breakups and 18 pressure in his 36 games (12 starts) for the Blue Devils. Rumph ranks fourth all-time in career sacks and his 3.5 sacks in a game against Miami in 2019 is tied for second best total in school history.
- The defensive end is the son of experienced defensive line coach Chris Rumph who has worked for a number of collegiate and NFL programs. Rumph currently coaches at Clemson, returning to the collegiate ranks in 2024 after coaching four seasons in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings (2022-2023), Chicago Bears (2021) and Houston Texans (2020). Rumph is a two-time national champion with Alabama in 2011 and 2012.
- The Gainesville, Fla., native played for Buchholz High School and earned all-state honors twice. He tallied 105 tackles, 21.0 tackles for loss, 18.0 sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries in his senior campaign.
